Bruins Patch
Anyone know the Origins of the Boston Bruins NHL team’s bear on their shoulder patch?
Also where does the yellow come into it. I saw this documentary about some parts of Canada have white and brown bears with in the same species. Its a genetic mutation and the bears with the white fur have a bruin glow to their fur as they move. I was wondering if its possible this is where the yellow came into their franchise. What does the brown in the clevland browns refer to. I figure it has something to do with stains but I’m not sure. Stains of old textile mills of course.
While I suspect you are not all that serious, I will answer in a serious manner anyway.
As stated, a bruin IS a bear.
The white bears you saw are referred to as Kermode bears (or something like that) that live on Princess Royal island off the coast of British Columbia. Indeed, genetically they are black bears that just happen to have white fur. There are also black bears that have blue-ish fur. All are the same species and will inter-breed. Like dogs with different coats. The coloring of these bears has nothing to do with the colors of the Bruins franchise.
The Browns are not named for the color, but rather for Paul Brown who founded the franchise and coached them through their dominance in the AAFC and the NFL when the leagues merged. Given that they were named the ‘Browns’, it seems a relative simple leap to choosing a uniform color.
Paul Brown later went on to found the AFL’s Cincinnati Bengals, and their current stadium is named Paul Brown Stadium in his honor.
